• Vauxhall has revealed the first images and details of the new Astra. Offering a new range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, the new Astra has reduced CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by up to 19% versus the outgoing model.

    Provisional figures indicate the petrol models will have CO2 emissions of between 101g/km and 110g/km (NEDC), with combined fuel economy of 47.9 mpg to 54.3mpg (WLTP).
    The diesel variants are then due to produce 96g/km to 110g/km of CO2 (NEDC) and offer a combined fuel economy of 53.3mpg to 64.2mpg (WLTP).

    As well as using more efficient engines, the new Astra helps lower emissions by being one of the most aerodynamic compact cars on the market.  This has been achieved through numerous measures, including an engine compartment cover, deflector-shaped rear axle control arms and a full-face shutter. The upper and lower portions of the new Astra’s radiator grille also automatically open and close independently of one another, which further improves the frontal airflow. An optimised underbody then improves the drag coefficient by reducing turbulence.

    The revised Astra is due to go on sale in August, with first deliveries expected in November. Pricing has not yet been announced.

  • Ford unveiled the new Ford Puma last week – an SUV-inspired compact crossover, featuring best-in-class load space and 48v mild-hybrid powertrain technology.

    The new Puma joins Ford’s growing line-up of SUV and SUV-inspired crossover models in Europe, including the Fiesta Active, Focus Active, EcoSport, Kuga, Edge, and the all-new Explorer Plug-In Hybrid. SUVs now account for more than one in five Ford vehicles sold in Europe, and sales rose more than 19 per cent in 2018.

    The New Ford Puma will be available from December.


  • The latest safety ratings from Euro NCAP were released this week, which includes the Tesla Model 3, Skoda Scala and Mercedes-Benz B-Class and GLE all achieving 5-Stars.

    The Kia Ceed and DS 3 Cross both achieved 4-Stars, which can then bumped up to 5-star with optional safety packs.

    The Model 3 in particular was one of the best performers across all four categories and has in fact earned the highest overall Euro NCAP score in history. ‘Safety Assist’ features such as Speed Assistance and Autonomous Emergency Braking, which are offered as standard on all variants, resulted in the Model 3 achieving a 94% rating in this category, alongside 96% for ‘Adult Occupant’, 86% for ‘Child Occupant’ and 74% for ‘Vulnerable Road Users’.


  • DS Automobiles have opened reservation for its all-electric DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE, the first ever electric DS car.

    The electric drivetrain is made up of a 100kW (136hp) electric motor with 260Nm of torque, linked to a 50kWh Lithium-ion battery and a system for recovering energy during deceleration and braking. The potential range of is 200 miles (WLTP) and has a 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds.

    Interested potential owners can secure a place on a priority listing with a £500 refundable deposit ahead of formal ordering and deliveries are then due to start from January 2020.

    Prices of the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE start at £35,850 (before grant).


  • Renault has revealed the All-New Captur, with refreshed exterior styling and an updated interior design, including an optional ‘Smart Cockpit’ with 9.3-inch portrait infotainment screen.

    The new engine line-up includes 100PS, 130PS and 155PS petrol engines, as well as 95PS and 115PS diesels. The Captur will also be the first Renault available with E-Tech plug-in hybrid technology and will be capable of up to 28 miles at speeds of 83mph in all-electric mode.

    The Renault Captur goes on sale at the end of 2019, with the plug-in hybrid versions available in the first half of 2020. Prices have yet to be announced.

  • Renault has also just revealed the latest and final addition to the Megane R.S. range, the Megane R.S. Trophy-R.

    With a 130kg reduction in weight over a standard Megane R.S. Trophy and a 300PS turbocharged 1.8-litre engine, the Trophy-R has become the fastest ever front-wheel drive production car to lap the Nurburging, with a time of 7 mins 40.1 seconds.

    Limited to just 500 examples, with 30 right-hand drive models coming to the UK, pricing will soon be announced before the cars goes on sale next month.

  • Jaguar Land Rover has revealed plans to manufacture a range of new electrified vehicles at its manufacturing plant in Castle Bromwich, UK. The announcement is the next significant step in delivering on the company’s commitment to offer customers electrified options for all new Jaguar and Land Rover models from 2020.

    The first vehicle to be produced at the plant has been confirmed as the next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ. Production of the existing XJ saloon has stopped as of today.

    Talking about the increased consumer take-up of electric cars, Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer of Jaguar Land Rover, said:

    “Affordability will only be achieved if we make batteries here in the UK, close to vehicle production, to avoid the cost and safety risk of importing from abroad. The UK has the raw materials, scientific research in our universities and an existing supplier base to put the UK at the leading edge of mobility and job creation.”

    As Jaguar Land Rover makes its commitment to electric car manufacturing in the UK, it calls on government and industry to work together to bring giga-scale battery production to the country. This builds on the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre and the government’s Faraday Challenge, essential for next generation battery technology to create smaller, denser, cheaper batteries. These critical steps will also support and grow the existing supply chain, making the UK less dependent on essential materials sourced abroad today.
